What’s a Vocal Reset (and Why Does Your Voice Need One)?

Ever feel like your voice just isn’t working the way it normally does? Maybe it sounds raspy, feels tight, or cracks when you try to sing something that’s usually easy. That’s your voice waving a little flag that it needs a reset.

Just like our bodies need rest and recovery after a tough workout or a stressful day, our voices need a chance to recalibrate too. That’s where a vocal reset comes in—a gentle, feel-good way to care for your voice and get things working smoothly again.

What is a Vocal Reset?

A vocal reset is a short routine that helps your voice recover and feel better, especially after:

  • A long day of talking or singing

  • Feeling vocally tired, strained, or croaky

  • Being sick or coming back from a cold

  • An intense singing session or rehearsal

Think of it as a “refresh” button for your voice. It’s not about pushing or forcing—it’s about helping your voice reset with rest, relaxation, and gentle vocal exercises.

What’s in a Vocal Reset?

In our Vocal Reset course inside the Singable Toolbox membership, we guide you through a feel-good reset routine that includes:

💆‍♀️ Gentle stretches

Tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw can sneak into your singing without you even noticing. Our stretches help release that tightness so your voice has more freedom to move.

🧋 Straw phonation in water

This one’s a game changer. Using a straw to make bubbles in water while vocalizing gives your voice a gentle massage. It helps reduce tension, improve airflow, and reconnect your voice to your breath—without strain.

😌 Reverse Phonation

Making sound on the inhale helps relax your voice and settle your larynx into a more neutral position. It’s a strange sensation—but surprisingly effective!

💤 Vocal rest

Yes, silence is golden. Sometimes the best thing you can do is not use your voice for a little while. We talk about why rest is so important and how to recognize when your voice is asking for it.

When Could You Use a Vocal Reset?

If you’re feeling vocally “off,” it’s a great time to try a reset. You don’t have to be sick or seriously hoarse—just noticing that your voice feels tired, rough, or not as responsive is reason enough.

Even when things are going well, doing a vocal reset every now and then can help you stay in tune with your body and build healthier vocal habits long-term.
